Have you ever felt a burning sensation in your throat coupled with nausea and dizziness when exposed to certain smells? Well, you are not alone. This is because a scent or smell can trigger different responses in different people. As such, while some people may be more sensitive to a certain smell, others may not react to it at all. Experts point out that chemicals in the environment that trigger odors can cause various health effects, such as headaches, eye discomfort and breathing difficulties, and can be fatal if inhaled in toxic inhalations. In fact, very recently, The Lucknow-Varanasi Krishak Express (15008) train had to be stopped due to a medical emergency after three passengers felt sick after being given stinky bed rolls and blankets.
The negative impact of odor on health
“Health effects from exposure to odors it can range from none to mild pain to more severe symptoms. However, the impact of the offending odor varies from person to person and is influenced by their immune system,” pointed out Dr. Bindumathi PL, Sr. Consultant – Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.
He added: “A dangerous inhalation can occasionally lead to lung damage, which can leave patients feeling faint and breathless. When an odor persists or continues to occur, it can also have an impact on stress levels, anxiety and mood.”

In addition, an odor can have a significant impact on people with low immunity, such as diabetic patients taking immunosuppressants, which can lead to headaches, nausea, fever, cough, bronchitis and myalgia. “Smelling chemicals can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Some people may experience a burning sensation when exposed to strong odors, which may induce coughing, wheezing or other breathing problems.”
Some reasons for the bad smell
A bad smell can occur for various reasons. Some of them are:
Mushroom development: If an odor comes from a dark, unlit area, the cause may be fungal growth.
Bacteria: The growth of bacteria on a surface can also cause bad odor.
Environmental toxins: Chemicals and chemical reactions can lead to a bad smell.
Treatment
Many people who are negatively affected by a certain smell instantly feel better when they are away from their surroundings. the smell its present. However, if you still feel sick, you may need to take an “anti-allergen pill that can be used for mild cases, and injections and oxygen can be used for severe cases,” Dr. Bindumathi said.
Precautions
-Finding the cause and eliminating it or containing it in some way to prevent odors from occurring are the best ways to manage indoor odors.
– Opening windows and turning on fans, adequate air conditioning helps improve fresh air ventilation, which will help reduce the odor until the source is removed.
-To prevent inhalation of dangerous substances in public places, it is recommended to use a mask when going outside.
However, using scented candles and room fresheners to eliminate the unpleasant smell might not be the best idea. Dr Bindumathi warned: “Some people choose to use air fresheners or scented candles to bring scents into their indoor space. By dispersing multiple chemicals into the indoor air, these scented items only cover or hide other scents. They can irritate sensitive people or trigger allergic reactions.”
